An older man's hands rise toward a spacecraft window, Earth below

Frank

An intimate portrait of a philosopher’s lifelong quest to help us better see ourselves.

A feature documentary about Frank White, author of The Overview Effect In production

Logline

After giving generations of astronauts the language to describe their transformative experiences, the octogenarian philosopher and author of The Overview Effect makes his own journey into space, realizing a dream he sparked a lifetime ago.

A man walks alone down a country path between green hills

This is a story of perseverance, faith, and planetary purpose, and of how one man’s vision helped humanity see itself anew.

Synopsis

In 1987, Frank White gave a name to what astronauts kept struggling to say: That seeing Earth whole, borderless and luminous against the dark, changes the person who sees it. He called it the Overview Effect.

For more than forty years, Frank nurtured a planetary movement, giving astronauts the language for the unity they felt looking back at Earth, and giving the rest of us a way to share it.

Now, in his eighties, he finally gets to experience the Overview Effect for himself. Interwoven with the voices of astronauts, artists, and visionaries inspired by his ideas, this intimate film captures a lifetime of philosophy integrated into an embodied experience.

Through Frank’s journey, we are invited to reflect on our interconnected world and on what it means to come home changed.

Poetic, intimate, and cosmically cinematic. The tenderness of a personal relationship framing a mythic journey.

Archival footage of Frank’s early years meets cinematic portraits retracing his pivotal steps. Ethereal images of Earth and space pair with contemplative vérité. Sparingly, original 2D animation in the bold, hand-printed language of Apollo-era flight diagrams visualizes Frank’s inner transformation.

We aim for a lyrical atmosphere where personal memory and planetary perspective blur.

Structure & Emotional Arc

The film’s structure takes its cue from unconventional films such as The Tree of Life and Oppenheimer. It takes the shape of memory, or music: A story told the way a mind recalls it.

Frank’s voyage into space casts light across a lifetime of inquiry, love, and reflection. We follow the ripples of that moment backward and forward in time, circling back to where we began: A grounded human being, transformed. The audience leaves ready to integrate what it has witnessed.

This is a journey to space, followed by a full-circle return home.

Ripples spreading from a single bright moment, with five selves, the Dreamer, the Translator, the Philosopher, the Traveler and the Messenger, held on different rings at once THE DREAMERa boy who looks upTHE TRANSLATORgives astronauts the wordsTHE PHILOSOPHERasks what it means for us allTHE TRAVELERcrosses the thresholdTHE MESSENGERreturns with truth

Foreshadow open

The rocket rumbles and shakes the viewer. Societal noise mounts: Talking, bleeping, radio signals, akin to the opening of Contact, with the pulse of Koyaanisqatsi. In an instant we are pulled out of the atmosphere and floating calmly above the Earth. The only sound is breath.

A drifting dust mote leads us to Frank’s face in the capsule window. His voice begins:

“I’ll never forget that flight. I had just left the political noise of DC. It was a time of societal unrest…”

We play with space and time: Frank at the climax of his spaceflight, telling the story of an earlier flight, an airplane after a meditation retreat, where he first conceived the Overview Effect.

Director’s statement

I’ve had the privilege of calling Frank White not only a mentor but one of my dearest friends. His words changed the course of my life, and through our friendship I’ve come to see the man behind the philosophy. Not just the thinker, but the tender, curious human who has waited a lifetime for a moment he gave to others first.

This film is Frank’s story, told through the eyes of someone who loves him. My voice will thread gently through it, not as a narrator above but as a friend alongside. I aim to hold space for Frank’s transformation in a way that invites others into it too.

The film honors the vulnerability of a dream deferred, the courage of transformation at any age, and the sacred act of returning with truth.

I hope audiences will not just witness Frank’s story but feel themselves within it. At its heart, it is about Frank’s life mission: Bringing the Overview Effect down to Earth.

Frank is the living proof of the idea at the heart of all my work: That a change of view can change a life. FRANK is my attempt to return the gift.

Help us bring the film to life

We are editing existing footage of interviews with Frank in intimate rooms and at his home. In December 2026, we will film Frank as he continues training for his spaceflight. By 2028, we plan to capture Frank’s flight to space and edit the full film to completion.

We are looking for partners and crew who care about this story and want to help realize its full vision.
